Connecting Satellite Science, Farmers, and Real-World Impact at AGU25
FIAT Steering Committee member Dwane Roth, NASA Acres Deputy Director Dr. Mike Humber, NASA Acres Executive Director Dr. Alyssa Whitcraft, NASA Acres partner Dr. Susan Metzger, FIAT Steering Committee member Ray Flickner, NASA Acres Strategic Engagement Officer Dr. Allison Bredder, and NASA Acres partner Dr. Manushi Trivedi at AGU25.
NASA Acres was in attendance at the 2025 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting last month, where the team presented on satellite-based solutions for agricultural monitoring through remote sensing. Satellite Solutions: Agricultural Monitoring Through Remote Sensing featured strong participation from farmers and stakeholders and created a direct connection between Earth observation science and on-the-ground decision-making. FIAT Steering Committee members Dwane Roth and Ray Flickner shared perspectives rooted in their firsthand farming experience, helping connect scientific research to on-farm realities.
NASA Acres Consortium members Drs. Alison Thieme, Steven Mirsky, Chris Reberg-Horton, and the broader Precision Sustainable Agriculture Cover Crop Remote Sensing Team to which their work contributes were also honored with AGU's Science and Society Team Award.
The team works across Maryland, Missouri, and Pennsylvania to estimate cover crop growth, nitrogen uptake, and termination timing using satellite data, helping validate program outcomes and inform program management. Spanning science and society, this work brings together scientists, program managers, academics, students, and technicians with a shared goal of informing agricultural policy through data-driven insights.
