U.S. Farmers Visit NASA Headquarters to Advance Earth Observation Collaboration in Agriculture
Members of the Illinois Corn Growers Association and the Kentucky Corn Growers Association visited NASA Headquarters for a day of engagement focused on advancing collaboration between farmers and the Earth science community. Farmers spoke with Dr. Karen St. Germain, Director of NASA’s Earth Science Division, and met with Dr. Thomas Wagner, Associate Director for Earth Science, alongside the NASA Acres and broader NASA Agriculture teams.
These conversations focused on how NASA Earth observation data can better support farmers’ needs. Producers shared firsthand insights on the challenges they face, from weather variability to input costs and resource management, and highlighted the types of tools and information that would be most useful in their day-to-day operations. This direct engagement helps guide NASA Acres’ co-development approach, ensuring that science is translated into practical, on-the-ground solutions.
As part of the visit, the group also toured NASA’s Earth Information Center (EIC), an immersive space designed to showcase how Earth observation data is applied to real-world challenges. Through interactive displays and data visualizations, participants explored how satellite data is used to monitor environmental conditions such as weather patterns, soil moisture, crop health, and land use change. The EIC provides a clear view of how NASA science is being brought down to Earth, helping connect cutting-edge data and tools with decision-making across sectors, including agriculture.
