NASA Acres was on the ground at the National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis in October, connecting with thousands of students and educators from across the country to showcase how NASA satellite data and Earth observation technology are advancing American agriculture.
Representing NASA Acres at the NASA booth, Program Support Specialist Jacob Orser and Farm Innovation Ambassador Team (FIAT) Liaison Faith Riensche introduced visitors to the practical applications of satellite data in agriculture and the opportunities these technologies offer the next generation of farmers, researchers, and agricultural professionals.
For Riensche, who was heavily involved in FFA programs and competitions throughout her student years, the convention was an opportunity to reconnect with an organization that helped shape her agricultural career.
"Having worn the blue jacket myself, it's exciting to be on the other side of the table at FFA, answering questions from students and advisors," said Riensche. "It's rewarding to spark curiosity about how NASA works directly with agriculture at all levels through FIAT, including future farmers!"
Through presentations and conversations with attendees, the team explored how Earth observations can help monitor crop conditions, assess plant health, and inform agricultural decision-making. Orser presented at NASA’s Hyperwall, demonstrating how satellite imagery can reveal patterns in field moisture and vegetation health, and how those observations relate to issues like forecasting crop yields.
"It was great to talk with students from across the country who are interested in so many different aspects of agriculture," said Orser. "One of the reasons I love this job is getting to hear what people are interested in and explore how Earth observation data can add another layer of information to help answer their questions."
Students also expressed interest in incorporating NASA data into classroom activities and Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs), hands-on projects that help FFA members develop practical skills and prepare for agricultural careers. Discussions also explored how tools such as the upcoming NASA Acres app could provide additional information to support students' research and projects.
Events like the National FFA Convention are part of NASA Acres' broader commitment to education, workforce readiness, and farmer outreach. By introducing students to Earth observation science and its real-world applications, NASA Acres is helping equip the next generation of agricultural leaders with the knowledge and tools to address the challenges facing American agriculture.
